The World Trade Center 9/11 “PARROT OF PEACE” NEEDS SAFE RETURN; $2,500 CASH REWARD

(PRWEB) September 12, 2002

Monday, September 9, 2002, New York City…In an ironic event which seems like a deja vu, BABY, the five year old Blue and Gold Macaw Parrot who, with his bonded mate, MERLIN, have been working every day of their lives with the singular purpose of getting out on the streets of all the boroughs of New York, Long Island and various places in upstate New York’s Catskill region of bring a smile to the faces of everyone they meet and spread the word of “HELP AND HOPE.” Since the event last year of the WTC , they have done their part in the whole world community of people internationally and animals who have come together to rebuild and share of themselves to lift the spirits of our great city and everyone they encounter. “People have lived through lightening striking twice, people have experienced both WTC attacks and come through it miraculously, people have come through the sinking of the Titanic and her sister ship and many more examples that miracles never cease,” said a police officer at the Fifth Precinct who shared his hope that BABY would again find his way home. “I wouldn’t have thought it was possible once but now I believe it can happen again,” said the Officer, holding MERLIN and stroking her to wish her well in the waiting vigil for the return of her mate.

On Saturday, 9/7, at 7:00 p.m. just after attending a WTC memorial mass at the Church of the Transfiguration in Chinatown’s Mott Street for the families who lost loved ones one year ago, BABY and MERLIN were asked to perch on the arm of two young girls by their mother who was delighted with the experience of seeing the parrots. The mom held the arms of both daughters as the parrots were perched on their arms but in a moment of surprise the younger girl flinched automatically throwing the bird into the air and BABY flew over the street traffic to the first safe landing place, the four way traffic stop at the intersection of Canal and Mott Streets. Landed at the feet of Traffic Officer Kundaker Alam, who was in the process of pulling BABY to the sidewalk to permit traffic flow, the passenger of a turquoise or blue-green early 90′s model Cavalier or similar style two door car, jumped out of the car to rescue what he saw as a parrot in trouble. He put him into the car and he and the driver continued east-bound in the direction toward the Manhattan Bridge. Transpiring in the two minute lapse before BABY’s landing and the arrival to retrieve him by owner and “adoptive mom,” Gloria Waslyn, she and MERLIN are turning once again to the support of the community to provide a way for whoever is holding BABY to be able to locate Gloria and return BABY to his mom and mate, MERLIN for a big hug and $ 2,500 cash reward, or another beautiful parrot who is in need of a good and loving home if he would prefer to have a parrot which may have seemed to be a gift from the heavens for him.

BABY’s rescuer was described by Columbia student Ho-Cheung Li who eye-witnessed the event as it unfolded as a male in his early 20′s, who was light tan skinned, possibly Latino in appearance with short dark curly hair, a thin moustache and a goatee-shaped beard. He was wearing a tee-shirt, shorts, sneakers and a baseball style cap worn reversed so that the bill was in the back. He was 5’8″ and medium-build with masculine features. Traffic Agent Alam also gave a description of the individual and vehicle. Both have telephone numbers and are available to help.

We are appealing to this man, or anyone who may know of a recently acquired blue and gold parrot who is most likely squawking loudly and incessantly, or someone who may have bought a bird of such description since Saturday night, to collect the reward money and bring BABY back to the only home that is truly his. A bonded pair of macaws are mates for their 100 year lifetime and both will die without one another as they pine away in despair. Merlin has not eaten or slept since BABY has been gone.

BABY and MERLIN participated in the mid February Chinese New Year’s Parade celebrating the year of the horse and marched on the shoulders of a local high school marching band’s major. When the parrots were being returned a young child on the shoulders of her dad reached out to pull a tail feather from BABY and it caused him to fly to the same intersection and land on the doorway of the Abacus Federal Savings Bank when a person in the crowd rescued BABY not noticing that MERLIN and Gloria were making their way through five rows deep of parade watchers. Good fortune smiled upon BABY, who earlier that day attended a service at the Pan-American Buddhist Temple and was given a special blessing by two women in the congregation. Forty-eight hours after BABY’s rescue, a woman on young woman on Eldridge Street, just blocks away from the corner of Mott and Canal called to say that her father saw a poster announcing reward money for BABY’s return. The reunion between BABY and MERLIN continues to be celebrated by various New Yorkers who continue to congratulate BABY and MERLIN when they see them in the street.

Please call with any information leading to the recovery and return of BABY to his mother and mate. If you hear the sound of a bird screaming at any time since Saturday evening and that’s a new sound, please call us as that may be BABY trying to call out in his bird language for his mate to hear him and find him. If you have the bird in your possession we ask that you have the compassion in your heart to collect the reward and bring BABY back to his mate MERLIN so they could continue their everyday work of bringing happiness to the hearts of New Yorkers everywhere. If you purchased such a bird since Saturday evening please return him for the reward. The five year old male blue and yellow macaw parrot has a closed silver band on his right leg with red color on the inside. He is 2-1/2 pound parrot with deep blue feathers on the top and sun yellow on his belly and under the wings and tail. He is about two feet long including the long tail with a large black hook beak, white skin on his face with small black zebra striped feathers on his face.

They have visited the WTC site continually bringing a moment of joy to the heros working tirelessly both in the initial rescue and on-going clean-up and renewal phases of this huge initiative of restoring New York, peace and harmony among all peoples as we together bond for helping one another. They have visited the working dogs care-takers, rescue workers, fire-fighters, police officers, emergency workers, hospitals, children at schools and houses of worship throughout the five boroughs of every faith and practice to bring the message of world unity. They are ambassadors of peace and carry the concept to “SAVE THE RAIN FOREST.”

They have met with James Watson at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to congratulate him on his discovery with Dr. Crick of the double-helix DNA as the language for life and have traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with Dr. Francis Collins who, as head of the National Institutes for Health was one of the scientists awarded by the White House for initiatives by our government in the contribution of an international collaboration in mapping the human genome. They have been to the Metropolitan Opera and sat with London opera singer, Jane Eaglen, as she autographed her third CD this winter to delighted fans of her performance as the lead in NORMA. BABY and MERLIN have been the invited guests of Professor Joseph Tucciani to enjoy biscotti and espresso in his living room where he recited his poetry on birds to them as they rested on the arms of his big chair in the living room. Professor Tucciani is a retired CUNY professor who had discovered and translated the before then unknown poetry of Michelangelo. His translations, also, from the original old Italian of Dante’s Inferno both in modern Italian and English brought a modern and poetic update to the epic work making it relevant in this age for a whole new audience otherwise uninterested in a classic piece of literature. This winter they met and congratulated Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry, the two American women released by the Taliban after being detained for their Christian missionary work in Afghanistan. They’ve met former NYC Public Advocate, Mark Green, and had the photograph of their meeting exhibited in the last Manhattan special exhibit of the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), “Life in the City.” They met New York Senator, Charles (Chuck) Schumer, and New York City Assembyperson, Deborah Glick. They have frequently visited Betty Johnson over a period of years as she got help and hope from them in her journey to recovery from a New York City homeless woman suffering emotional and physical illness to a woman of courage and dignity living in New York assisted housing with a strong relationship with her two young adult daughters who have thrived in their open adoptive family setting.

BABY and MERLIN have visited hospitals to bring cheer to wheel-chair bound children, elder homes to bring spirit to residents and have participated in numerous events around the city including singing with Ms. Roche during a Battery Park folk-song event, sitting on stage at the Central Park band shell to congratulate the conductor and the music students of the Lucy Moses Music School for their fine classical orchestral performance this summer. They enjoyed meeting Spanish flamenco dancers and musicians also performing on a rainy summer evening this year at Central Park. They have been held and enjoyed by countless subway and street musicians and performs entertaining New Yorkers as a vital part of the cultural fabric of this city. They have enjoyed parades, the Coney Island Mermaid parade, native American pow-wows in Brooklyn and upstate NY, as well as New Jersey and Cape Cod, MA.

Subject: In Reality, Big Banks Don’t Go Bust – Or Do They?

In reality, big banks don’t go bust. What many of you have not looked at carefully, is that JPM and other big banks make those derivative plays through subsidiary divisions. Though that company is a part of them, it is done in such a way that they do not have to assume responsibility. So if those derivatives go against JPM, its subsidiary takes the hit and is liable, not JPM. They will simply collapse the subsidiary or the Government will come in and attempts to bail them out. So forget about waiting for those big banks to go bust. They have been at this milking game for a long time and have connections in high places.

What it is going to happen, though, if enough of the subsidiaries go bust? There is going to be a serious shock to the whole system, which could lead to its demise and collapse, The total derivative play is around $ 72 trillion, of which Gold shorts or derivatives account for approx. $ 300 billion, a drop in an ocean. But just one derivative crash could trigger off another, and that’s the problem,

In addition, this ½ point rate cut was a not a smart move. It has made holding money in the US less attractive compared to Europe, and we are already seeing a flight of capital. Not huge, but slow and systematic withdrawal and very little infusion of new capital.

We need in the tune of $ 1½ billion a day to take care of our deficits. So gold will have it hey day sooner than later. After the interest rate cut the dollar dropped. The dollar is already in a slow protracted bear market, the question is how low is it going to go on, not can it go any lower.

CURRENCY PLAY: As a hedge, I suggest investing in the New Zealand dollar and the Aussie dollar, and very soon if conditions are right, the Canadian dollar.

One currency that most people have not considered is the South African Rand, which is a full resource based economy and has the largest reserves of gold, platinum, diamonds, etc in the world. It has already moved nicely from a low of 14 Rands to 1 dollar to 10 Rands to one dollar.

The disturbing trend is that this derivative collapse or implosion is for the first time a imminent reality, as before it was just something to worry about. Now it’s a question of how soon is it going to occur, since we have systematic problems occurring simultaneously across the world.

“As the former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, I remember when you first launched the Intergenerational Celebration…I will never forget being paired with Queen Latifah. It opened my eyes to the way many of our young people experience society today, and it was especially eye-opening to see the influence someone like Queen has on today’s youth. The event triggered an explosion of positive dialogue that turned the nation’s attention to some extremely important issues including the communications

CALIFORNIA BBQ HEADS TO K.C.

JACK DANIELS COMPETITION IS NEXT

Signature Sauce Company Co-Owner and Champion Cooker

Grant Ford to Cook in Two International Events in October

Long Beach, Calif. — Grant Ford, co-owner of Southern California’s premier barbecue sauce purveyor BBQ’n Fools (http://www.bbqnfools.com) will travel to the 24th American Royal Barbecue competition next week to defend his title — and the honor of the sauce! — against all comers. Ford has won awards in this competition two years running, and hopes for a ‘three-peat’ October 2-4, in Kansas City, Mo.

Following that, it’s off to Lynchburg, Tenn., for the 15th Annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue on Saturday, October 25th. This is an invitation-only event, where just 50 teams make the cut. Grant will “make the cut” on several excellent pieces of meat. The competition covers pork ribs, pork shoulder, whole hog, beef brisket and chicken.

“I’ve won 1st place in Chicken four times in a row at California State Championship competitions,” said Grant. “It will be a challenge to see how my chicken does on a national level.”

The ARB event in Kansas City (http://www.americanroyalbbq.com/) begins the six-week American Royal, which includes a rodeo, livestock shows, parade — and of course the world’s largest barbecue contest. The event is one of the largest non-fair expos in North America, and began as a national cattle show in the Kansas City Stockyards in 1899.

The competition is officially sanctioned and operates under the rules established by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (http://www.kcbs.us), the largest international organization of barbecue enthusiasts. The society sanctions contests and supervises the judging process at contests all over North America.

The Jack Daniel’s World Championship is “One of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast”, according to the Southeast Tourism Society, and one of the most prestigious barbecue competitions in the world. Teams from the U.S. and around the world — including Jamaica, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, Japan, and Switzerland — are expected.

Openly gay recording artist ARI GOLD’s latest cd SPACE UNDER SUN is available now. Interviews available.

(PRWEB) January 15, 2004

Dear Colleague, I would love to send you a copy of Ari Gold’s most recent cd release Space Under Sun. I would love for you to consider an interview with Gold. He has an incredible new video for his song Wave of You.

“…Infinite possibility, if I can only break down this fourth wall/I’m living in a room for everyone, finding my space under the sun…”and so goes the title track of Ari Gold’s sophomore release, Space Under Sun (Available now independently over the internet on Gold 18 Records).

In a market saturated with manufactured stars who for the most part are perfectly content churning out the same old cliché’s, Gold is determined to shake pop up and find a space for his music in a postmodern world. “I wanted to make an album that I didn’t have when I was growing up,” Ari told Larry Flick of Billboard magazine in 2001 regarding his first album as an openly gay pop singer which would later take home the Outmusic Award for Outstanding Debut Recording. With Space Under Sun Gold goes even further musically & lyrically and creates a pop landscape that goes beyond boundaries and labels.

After landing on Top Of The Pops with DJ Luck and MC Neat on the UK single, “I’m All About You” (Island Universal) co-written and produced by hitmaker Desmond Child, Gold began working on Space Under Sun. He collaborated with top notch industry songwriters and producers such as Peter Amato (Leanne Rimes), Marsha Malamet (Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan), MAJOR (Lamya), Mr. Khalil (Res), Steve Skinner (Rent, Bette Midler), Soong Lee (Allure) recording all over the globe from Atlanta, Miami, LA and NYC to London and Israel.

Gold describes the album as “an intergalactic hybrid of 80’s and contemporary R&B, spacey pop, and funky smooth soul.” Gay City News stated that “Gold pushes the envelope as much as a rapper like Eminem does.” Although instead of lyrics that are fag bashing and woman hating, the subject matter ranges from a guy and a girl (Kendra Ross, currently featured on the latest CD by Talib Kweli) fighting over the same man (”He’s On My Team”) to getting caught having sex in public with another man by the cops (”Caught), to diva worship (”Fan-tastic”), a matter that is crucial to many a gay man’s evolution, seeking independence and self actualization (”More Than Enough,” “Back To me”) to romantic and sexual intimacy (“Funk That Ship,” “Intimate.”) There is also the tender ballad “Bashert (Meant To Be) in which Gold incorporates his Jewish identity of having grown up as an orthodox Jew.

The 13 track CD includes a downloadable music video of “Wave Of You” directed by Guy Guido which was shot as a tribute to the late great photographer Herb Ritts as well as an mp3 of “Review My Kisses” a song co-written and produced by Desmond Child. Gold will continue performing in NYC, where Time Out magazine said that he was a “smash success…wowing the local music scene” and Backstage called his musicianship, “flawless”, as well as around the globe to promote his new CD.

Bold, nuanced, introspective and honest, Ari Gold is not afraid to be who he is and sing about it– whether its the transgression of singing love songs about men or being a Jewish boy from the Bronx growing up with an unusual affinity for R&B. Ari Gold is worth being recognized.

More Make Gold Wow Press Releases

Lifestyle at Sea

(PRWEB) February 27, 2004

Port Coquitlam, BC PRWEB) February 27, 2004 — According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the median age of cruiser buyers in the U.S. in 2002 was 50 with a median income of $ 134,000, being mostly well-to-do empty nesters with time, money, freedom, and having a more leisurely approach to water leisure. At 50, life passes quickly, so they are less interested in speed and though they enjoy sea travel they prefer comfort to the labors involved and, according to Seaforth’s VP David James, they are ready for a luxury trawler, even if they don’t know it yet.

Seaforth Marine Group is based in Port Coquitlam, 20 minutes from Vancouver, British Columbia. “The Tradition series was designed to bring comfort to the current, rather Spartan, bareboat style of trawler travel,” he says. “We listened to a growing number of seasoned boaters wanting a slower, safer, more stylish and more comfortable motor yacht. These people have made many good choices in life – and the Tradition gives them unprecedented opportunity to make more choices between good, better and best levels of comfort and style in a trawler. To our knowledge, there is nothing else currently on the market like the Tradition.”

This 58′ full displacement vessel is large enough for family or friends, but small enough for a captain or an experienced couple to manage on their own. The Tradition’s graceful integration of space, strength, stability, handling, and style is no surprise due to the impeccable credentials of the in-house design team led by Winston Pynn and Mike Harling.

Harling has been designing and building boats for almost half a century in both Europe and North America. He designed Cooper Yachts’ Prowler 40′ and Queenship’s Berretta 70′ series, and supervised the production and engineering of Cooper’s legendary Mary J. I & II, Reminisce, and Saratoga motor yachts, as well as for Queenship’s Admiralty series.

Naval architect Winston Pynn, the lead Tradition designer, has more than a decade of experience in the design and production of both mega-yachts and small boats at custom and production yards across North America, including Trinity Yachts in New Orleans and Luhrs Mainshed in St. Augustine, Florida.

The first category of choice in this high-end trawler is the power package – with greater fuel economy and range, , an easy cruise to Hawaii from the West Coast – along with the safety of a back-up come-home drive.

More choices follow in the second category of interior finish. It’s all a matter of good, better, and best according to Seaforth’s in-house design chief Coralee Huffman. She started her career in restaurant and hotel design, but soon found her true m

On July 1, 2004, Berlin will be returning to the Bay Area for an encore intimate performance at 19 Broadway Niteclub in Fairfax, California. This Los Angeles-based synth-pop group, founded by bassist John Crawford, singer Terri Nunn, and keyboard player David Diamond, made its first national impression with the provocative single “Sex (I’m A… )” from the gold-selling debut EP Pleasure Victim in 1982. The group was filled out by guitarist Rick Olsen, keyboard player Matt Reid, and drummer Rob Brill. Berlin’s first full-length LP was the gold Love Life in 1984. In 1985, the group was pared down to a trio of Crawford, Nunn, and Brill. Berlin topped the charts in 1986 with the single “Take My Breath Away,” the love theme from the Tom Cruise movie Top Gun. “Take My Breath Away” spawned an international number-one single, a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award. Nunn left for a solo career in 1987, and Crawford and Brill teamed up in the Big F. In 1999, the band reunited to record some new studio material and also performed a concert, which, along with the new songs, was released as 2000′s Berlin Live: Sacred & Profane. This was followed a year later by a flurry of recording sessions that included co-writing tracks with Billy Corgan among others. The end result, Voyeur, was their first full-length studio release in over 15 years.

ABOUT 19 BROADWAY NITECLUB:

Voted the “Best Music Venue in Marin County “ in 2003 by the North Bay Bohemian, and most recently “Best Place for Live Music” by the Pacific Sun. 19 BROADWAY is one of the premier music venues of the entire Bay Area. Located in the charming town of Fairfax, it is a short 14-mile drive north of the Golden Gate Bridge and its central location makes it a major destination for music fans from all over the area. In January 2001, the owners completed the expansion of the nightclub by taking over the building next door, thus doubling the size of the club. A brand new sound system was installed, along with a new and enlarged dance floor, new stage, and new lights.

In 2003, the owners added a slice of paradise to the mix with MR. VISE GRIP’S BAMBOO BAR complete with thatched awnings, bamboo covered walls, ubiquitous tiki god statues, comfy cabana chairs and a bar list of “exotic libations” complete with Mr. Grip’s own version of the Zombie entitled “Nite of the Living Dead.”

Since the 2001 remodeling, this little red-brick hideaway has evolved into a world-class night club and host to a wide range of top reggae, world-music, jazz, rock and folk acts who perform in an up close and personal setting that is just about unparalleled in the Bay Area. Recent billings have included the alt-rock super group BANYAN, jazz diva DIANE SCHUUR, jazz sage MOSE ALLISON, the COUNT BASIE BAND, R&B sax pioneer SAM BUTERA, surf-guitar king DICK DALE, the MAMMALS (featuring fiddler Jay Ungar’s daughter and Pete Seeger’s grandson), the SAM KININGER BAND (featuring the band’s namesake and Soulive saxophonist), AC/Dshe (a butt-kicking all-girl AC/DC tribute band), and RADIO ALICE @97.3’s “EMERGING ARTISTS SHOWCASE” with DIANA ANAID, RADFORD, and INKA. Future billings include THE ROCKIN BILLYS SHOW with BILL KIRCHEN and BILLY C. FARLOW, and BOW WOW WOW, the quartet organized by U.K. manager Malcolm McLaren (best known as the mastermind behind the Sex Pistols) at the start of the ’80s, and featuring ADRIAN YOUNG (drummer of “No Doubt”).

Tanglewood Jazz Festival: World-Class Jazz in a World-Class Setting

(PRWEB) July 24, 2004

PRWEB) July 24, 2004 — The Boston Symphony Orchestra will present its annual Labor Day Weekend Tanglewood Jazz Festival to be held September 3-5 at the Orchestra’s summer home in the Berkshire Mountains in Lenox, Massachusetts. Jazz greats highlighting this year’s festival include Harry Connick, Jr., the Branford Marsalis Quartet, the Dave Brubeck Quartet and Symphonette, Marian McPartland, Taylor Eigsti, Eliane Elias, Eddie Palmieri and La Perfecta II, the Doug Wamble Quartet, the Miguel Zenon Quartet, and tap dancers Savion Glover and Jimmy Slyde in a special jazz tap performance.

“It’s a distinct pleasure for us at Fidelity to support the Tanglewood Jazz Festival, one of the many high notes of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer session at Tanglewood,” said Robert L. Reynolds, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Fidelity Investments.

“Considered by many to be the most American of art forms, jazz perfectly reflects the boundless creativity, innovation and energy of the American spirit. We’re proud to be able to do our part to make this festival possible, and we hope that our ongoing commitment to the BSO and this consistently outstanding event ensures that the sound of jazz will echo across the Berkshires and beyond for years to come.”

This year’s festival opens Friday, September 3, at 8 pm with a performance by Brazilian born, Grammy nominated pianist, Eliane Elias, known for her distinctive musical style blending jazz and classical music. Her early career included work with Antonio Carlos Jobim’s co-writer and lyricist, Vinicius de Moraes. She is considered one of the great interpreters of Jobim’s music with two albums solely dedicated to works of the composer.

Ms. Elias has recorded 16 chart-topping albums on Blue Note, RCA/Bluebird, EMI Classics, Red Seal and BMG. She has recorded with Randy Brecker and the Grammy winning Brecker Brothers, Joe Henderson, Sting, Caetano Veloso, Michael Franks, Earl Klugh and Toots Thielemans. Ms. Elias and Herbie Hancock were nominated for a Grammy in 1995 for their collaboration on “Solos and Duets.” In 2001, Ms. Elias was featured in the documentary film, “Calle 54,” directed by Oscar winner, Fernando Trueba, and in 2002 she recorded with opera sensation Denyce Graves.

Her new CD, “Dreamer,” (Arista-Bluebird 2004) was recorded with a full orchestra and is an elegant, sensual selection of bossa nova and American standards such as “Call Me,” “Tangerine,” and “Baubels, Bangels and Beads.” With orchestrations by Rob Mathes (who has worked with Luciano Pavarotti, Yo Yo Ma, Sting, Lou Reed and Stevie Wonder) and special guests, bossa nova guitar legend, Oscar Castro Neves, and tenor saxophonist, Michael Brecker. The recording has reached #4 on the Billboard charts, #8 on jazz radio charts and is ranked the #3 jazz album in France. It was also awarded a Gold Disc Award in Japan.

Ms. Elias will perform on piano and vocals with Marc Johnson on bass, Satoshi Takeishi on drums and Ruban de la Corte on guitar.

The stage will be on fire in the second set Friday night with Latin salsa king, Eddie Palmieri and his ten-piece ensemble, La Perfecta II, representing the high energy of contemporary Latin jazz at its best. Palmieri, a Spanish Harlem native and seven-time Grammy winner, is deeply rooted in hard core salsa and Latin jazz influenced by Thelonius Monk and McCoy Tyner as well as his friend and close colleague, the late Tito Puente.

Combining chamber string influences, salsa, mambo and driving Latin jazz, Palmieri has revived the powerful sound of the ensemble that he originally created four decades ago. Replacing the traditional trumpet section with a trombone section (“the band with the crazy roaring elephants”), Palmieri’s innovative instrumentation and varied musical influences have become his trademark.

The Friday night program will be broadcast live on WGBH Radio, Boston, WBGO Radio, Newark, and 15 other public radio stations across the country.

Tony winner, Savion Glover, and tap legend, Jimmy Slyde, will present a special all-jazz tap performance at 1 pm on Saturday, September 4, at the Theatre Stage.

Glover stormed across the dance world in the 1980’s with his hard-hitting tap and improvisational choreography uniting elements from jazz, hip-hop, rap, be-bop and world music. Featured on the cover of “Dance” Magazine (May 2004) his recent performances are called “captivating, his hold on the audience through his singular performance is extreme.” The late Gregory Hines, Glover’s idol, was quoted once as saying, “There is Savion Glover and then there are the rest of us… he has changed the way we perceive tap dancing.”

Glover debuted on Broadway as the lead in “The Tap Dance Kid” in 1983 at age 12. In 1988, he co-starred in the film, “Tap,” with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis, Jr. and has appeared on PBS in “Dance in America: Tap!” with Hines and Tommy Tune.

He earned a Tony nomination in 1989 for his performance on Broadway in “Black & Blue” and appeared opposite Gregory Hines in “Jelly’s Last Jam” in 1992-93.

Glover won the Tony Award in 1996 for his choreography of “Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk” and has performed in venues around the world including the Moulin Rouge, Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian Institution, Carnegie Hall and the White House. He has appeared on CBS, ABC and PBS and on the big screen in the Spike Lee film, “Bamboozled.” Glover is currently working on a project with Wynton Marsalis for the opening of Jazz at Lincoln Center in the Fall of 2004 and is an artist-in-residence at the Sundance Institute.

Jimmy Slyde (born Jimmy Gotbolt) is a tap master with a rich performance history. He began dancing at age 14 and joined the popular act, the Slyde Brothers (with Jimmy “Sir Slyde” Mitchell) that launched him into an international stage career in the 1930′s and 1940′s performing in major cities and venues around the world. His signature dance style of appearing to slide or skate across the stage resulted in an inevitable name change and he adopted the moniker Jimmy Slyde. He recently performed at Columbia University with the Sir Charles Thompson Trio in “Bebop is a Dance,” (April 2004).

Pianist, Marian McPartland, known to NPR listeners for her “Piano Jazz” series, which turns 26 this year, returns to Tanglewood’s Ozawa Hall with special guest, pianist, Taylor Eigsti, on Saturday, September 4, at 3 pm for a live taping of the program for a future “Piano Jazz” broadcast. Since 1978, Ms. McPartland has interviewed over 500 musicians and performers including Norah Jones (recorded live at last year’s Tanglewood Jazz Festival), Diana Krall, Elvis Costello, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Rosemary Clooney, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, Ray Charles, Carmen McRae and even William F. Buckley. Her easy, comfortable style, charm and quick-witted humor engage her guests in fascinating and sometimes revealing conversations while seated at the piano.

Ms. McPartland’s special guest will be Taylor Eigsti, (pronounced “ikes-dee”) a 19 year old Californian, who has been performing on stage since the age of eight when he debuted with David Benoit. His highly accelerated music career has included appearances with Diana Krall, Natalie Cole, James Moody, Bobby Hutcherson, Kevin Mahogany, Bill Watrous, Diane Schuur, Lewis Nash, Alan Broadbent, Red Holloway, Rufus Reid and Dave Brubeck who claimed, “he’s the most amazing talent I’ve ever come across. Remember him.” Eigsti has also performed in the classical and opera genres with Sylvia McNair, Frederica von Stade, the San Jose Symphony and the Sacramento Philharmonic.

Billboard Magazine ranked Eigsti’s third and latest CD, “Resonance” (Bop City Records 2003) “an A+…a composer/player who’s going to have a major-league jazz career.” Downbeat Magazine and the All Music Guide both awarded it four-stars, noting Eigsti’s sophisticated composing and arranging style.

A Presidential Scholar at the University of Southern California, Eigsti has an impressive teaching resume as a member of the faculty of the Stanford Jazz Workshop and the San Jose State Jazz Workshop since 1999. He is committed to teaching and performing with younger players and is interested in other genres of music, as are many of his contemporaries such as Jane Monheit, Peter Cincotti and Jamie Cullam.

Harry Connick, Jr. brings his 16 piece big band and additional 16 piece string orchestra to Tanglewood Saturday, September 4, at 8 pm in the Koussevitzky Music Shed as part of his national “Only You” Tour. Winner of three Grammy awards, Connick has sold over 20 million records. An accomplished film and TV acting career (“Memphis Belle,” “Hope Floats,” “Independence Day” and NBC’s “Will and Grace”) has resulted in nominations for a Tony, an Emmy, an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Cable Ace Award.

Connick’s latest CD with his big band is “Only You,” (Sony 2004) and features an eclectic selection of pop love songs from the 1950’s and 1960’s including “I Only Have Eyes For You,” Goodnight My Love,” “For Once in My Life,” and the title song, “Only You.” The CD debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200 chart and has reached Gold record status.

Sunday, September 5, at 2 pm will kick off the full roster of the Marsalis Music label. The artists in “Marsalis Music Presents” are the Branford Marsalis Quartet, the Harry Connick, Jr. Quartet, the Doug Wamble Quartet and the Miguel Zenon Quartet.

Saxophonist, Branford Marsalis, is making jazz history, not only through performance with the Branford Marsalis Quartet, but with the recent creation of the Marsalis Music label. Committed to artist-driven recordings, rather than commercial, profit-driven projects by major labels, Marsalis Music is led by a foremost jazz musician and a man with a vision.

The September 2003 release of “Romare Bearden Revealed,” features Mr. Marsalis on saxophone, Joey Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass, Jeff “Tain” Watts on drums and guest artists Doug Wamble on guitar and Wynton Marsalis on trumpet. The project was based on “The Art of Romare Bearden,” a retrospective exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art and a clear signal to the music community that Marsalis Music had a new approach to the recording industry.

Mr. Marsalis will perform with his regular quartet members Calderazzo, Revis and Watts.

Harry Connick, Jr. returned to his jazz roots in 2003 with an instrumental recording (no vocals) on Marsalis Music entitled, “Other Hours.” The first in a “Connick on Piano” series planned by the label, the Harry Connick, Jr. Quartet was enthusiastically received by hard-core jazz critics. Material on the CD includes 12 original compositions for the musical, “Thou Shall Not,” based on Emile Zola’s classic 1868 novel, “Therese Racquin,” for which Connick received a Tony nomination.

Connick will perform with band members Charles “Ned” Goold on tenor saxophone, Neal Caine on bass and Arthur Latin, II on drums.

Bursting onto the scene with a debut recording that received excellent reviews from critics across the country, guitarist and vocalist, Doug Wamble, weaves blues, jazz, country and gospel into a rich, highly textured sound.

A Tennessee native and graduate of Memphis State University and Northwestern University, Wamble first embarked on a career as a recording engineer to assuage his family’s fears of his becoming a professional musician. An inspiring performance by guitarist, Russell Malone, with Harry Connick, Jr.’s big band altered Wamble’s course of study and he set off on a journey that would lead to a full time career as a guitarist and vocalist.

His Marsalis Music recording, “Country Libations,” includes nine original songs that he cites to three major influences: delta blues, gospel and Ornette Coleman.

Wamble will perform with Roy Dunlap on piano, Jeff Hanley on bass and Peter Miles on drums.

Alto saxophonist and composer, Miguel Zenon, has become a serious force in the jazz world since his emergence on the national scene in 2001. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston and the Manhattan School of Music in New York, Zenon, who had planned to become an engineer, has dazzled critics and audiences with his sophisticated compositions and lyrical, rhythmic playing.

Heavily influenced by Puerto Rican folk, or jibaro, singers from his homeland, as well as West African rhythms, salsa, traditional bomba y plena and hymns he heard as a child, Zenon exemplifies the new generation of jazz musicians in his global approach to music.

Awarded a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts to compose music to be performed at the Jazz Gallery in New York, Zenon wowed critics with his “impressively organized, intellectually powerful compositions” (New York Times) with the debut of “Jibaro Journeys: Music from the Mountains of Puerto Rico.”

Zenon’s resume includes extensive work with the David Sanchez Quartet, pianist, Danilo Perez, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the San Francisco Modern Jazz Collective led by Joshua Redman. His new CD on Marsalis Music, “Ceremonial” (2004) is representative of the commitment by the label to support and showcase a contemporary, highly talented, improvising musician with a unique sound. “Ceremonial” includes seven originals and the traditional hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness.”

Jazz giant and Tanglewood favorite, Dave Brubeck, closes the festival Sunday, September 5, at 8 pm, at Ozawa Hall with his legendary Quartet and a special performance of the Quartet augmented by a 23 piece string symphonette. As an innovator of the original “West Coast” jazz style, Dave Brubeck’s illustrious career is a chapter from contemporary American cultural history.

From his early years as a jazz pianist in clubs and on college campuses to performing in every major concert hall and performance center in the world, Brubeck, who was born and raised in California, consistently delivers what is considered to be the highest standard in American jazz music.

With literally hundreds of recordings under his belt, Brubeck’s latest is a personal memoir of his Army career at the end of World War II. “Private Brubeck Remembers” (Telarc, May 2004) is a solo piano recital of memorable classics such as “Where or When,” “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me),” and “Last Time I Saw Paris.” A second CD in the set includes an interview with Walter Cronkite discussing Brubeck’s experience of leading a band on the frontlines.

A new five CD box entitled, “For All Time,” (Sony, March 2004) features recordings made by the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet (with Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright and Joe Morello) between 1959 and 1965, and showcases the extraordinary talent of a true American icon.

Brubeck will perform with quartet members Michael Moore on bass, Bobby Militello on reeds, and Randy Jones on drums.
